Access Cities supports new agreement on sustainable waste, water and soil solutions between Singapore and Denmark

Access Cities will deliver activities within the official working programme between Singapore’s Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources and Denmark’s Ministry of Environment, creating export opportunities for Danish SMEs.

On 26 February 2020, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen the development of tomorrow’s sustainable solutions was signed between Singapore’s Ministry of Environment and Water Resources and Denmark’s Ministry of Environment.

The 5-year agreement is designed to identify partnership opportunities, showcase solutions and formalise the collaboration with Singapore’s government and some of Asia’s leading industry players. The MoU will also increase the exposure of Danish green solutions in Singapore and its surrounding markets.

Waste and water in focus

The Royal Danish Embassy is leading a working group – with participation from key Danish and Singaporean stakeholders such as Access Cities – to develop the new MoU’s official working programme. The programme centres on the following areas:

• Waste: E-waste including urban mining, waste incinerator bottom ash and mixed plastics and plastics waste upcycling.
• Water: Non-revenue water, water efficiency for domestic and non-domestic sectors and smart technology applications for water management.
• Soil Quality: Environmental soil quality standards, regulation and enforcement of environmental soil quality standards.
• Climate adaption, Circular Economy and Sustainable Development.

How do you benefit from the MoU?

In connection with the MoU, Access Cities is developing Open Innovation Calls in collaboration with The National Environmental Agency (NEA) in Singapore. The calls will focus on waste within food, packaging and electronics and will be launched in January 2021 with the pitch finals taking place in spring 2021.

How does the MoU work?
The MoU sets the framework for the collaboration between Singapore and Denmark on environmental and sustainable development over the next five years. The agreement between the countries is to explore primarily five avenues of collaboration:
– Exchange of information, best practices and expertise, including study visits to both countries.
– Encourage partnerships amongst relevant industries, organisations and government agencies on sustainable environmental and water management through pilot projects and demonstration activities.
– Encourage cross participation in environmental and water flagship events.
– Explore joint research and publications on sustainable environmental and water management.
– Explore avenues for technological cooperation and transfer of new technologies.
